Dearest One Cast of Characters
GEORGE DOLAN Early to mid twenties. A sweeper and general dog’s body at the local woollen/cotton mill. Eats all his meals at the Sleeping Mermaid which is next to his place.
BETH (ELIZABETH). Late teens. Daughter of a lumber baron. She fell in love with one of the loggers. He’s gone away to sea to seak and seek his fortune. She wanted to run away with him. He vows that no matter what, he will return in two years time to this coastal maritime village from where he had set out. To the day. It was the full moon in October when he left her and so he will return on the full moon. Now it is two years since. She has run away from her family and to the fishing village. She waits on the village’s pier for his return. Always she clutches the letter he sent her which begins: “Dearest One.”
PADDY DOLAN George’s father. He’s in his late forties to early fifties. A road weary man, living by his wits and what he can steal, borrow or connive. A charmer as long as you don’t depend upon him.
MAGGIE WALSH Owner of the Sleeping Mermaid, a one time inn and now a pub and restaurant which is across the road from the woollen/cotton mill. Salty and tough by circumstances. Treats George like a son.
RODDY SPARKS Mid to late twenties. Son of the mill owner. Spoiled, useless. He works as a glorified clerk at the mill but does little there but chat up all the girls.
IDA The prettiest girl at the mill. She’s in her late teens. A tease. Aware and proud of her beauty. Has her eyes on Roderick and someday living in the grand house. Also likes to tease George (Georgie Porgie).
