*MITZI CARPENTER Late teens/early twenties. Has a sweet voice, a beguiling personality — unless she’s angry. She has come to Hollywood to get into movies. A daydreamer that sees life as a drama, something to manipulate.
OFFICER On foot patrol.
WAITER In a working-class restaurant.
*CHUCKY Late twenties. He was injured in the war, lost most of his left arm. He’s the band leader at the Dreamland Dance Hall, younger brother to HARRY who owns the hall. His gruff exterior hides his insecurity. He does his brother’s bidding and tries to keep him out of trouble. It’s CHUCKY who really runs the dance hall, not his brother.
*GERTIE (Gertrude) A few years younger than CHUCKY. She’s a dancer at the hall. In love with Chucky but knows how to keep her distance if he gets too prickly.
*LOLA She’s in her early thirties. Once a dancer at the hall . Now she’s HARRY’s girlfriend. Her makeup is a bit overdone in order to compete with all the young girls working as taxi dancers, most of whom want to get into movies.
*HARRY Owns and runs the Dreamland Dance Hall with his younger brother, CHUCKY. Like so many dance hall/nightclub owners, makes his own bootleg liquor which he illegally serves at the hall.

*TONY GALLO An L.A. crime boss. Forties or fifties. From Italy but grew up in Little Italy in New York city. Movie-star good looking; a fancy dresser.
BODYGUARD (optional) TONY’s bodyguard.
GLADYS Working class woman, mid-thirties to early forties.
IDA GERTIE’s roommate. About her age. A prim and proper girl. Works in a bank’s office.
MR. WHIMPLE TONY GALLO’s lawyer. A scrawny man with a nervous tic.

DAVIE A piano player in the band.
MAISIE GERTIE’s new roommate. She’s also a dancer at the Dreamland Dance Hall.
